The Hellinikon Olympic Complex has been created on part of the area once occupied by Athens airport. At this site the two Olympic Airways hangars (the large and small hangar) were renovated as two indoor halls. The large hangar was used to host the Olympic basketball and handball events and the Paralympic wheelchair rugby and wheelchair badminton events while the small hangar was used to host the fencing events at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Innovative design was employed at the Hellinikon site to construct one of the best courses for the canoe-kayak-slalom event in terms of the technique required by athletes. Other events held at the state-of-the-art stadiums at the Hellinikon Olympic Complex were baseball, softball, hockey, archery, 5x5 football and 7x7 football.
