OPEN STADIUMS SCHEME
«THE CELEBRATION OF OLYMPISM CONTINUES!»

A) "Choose the sport that suits you"

The Hellenic Ministry of Culture's General Secretariat for Olympic Utilisation, in association with the Hellenic Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and various sports federations are implementing an educational course entitled 'Choose the sport that suits you!'.

The main objective of the course, which takes the form of info-days and educational events, is for school pupils - as future athletes and sports fans- to visit and be guided around the Olympic venues that hosted the 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games so that they can take up the baton when it comes to utilising the Olympic legacy.

As part of the scheme, Olympic medallists, champions, national coaches, representatives of sports federations and sports doctors talk to school pupils with the aim of encouraging them to 'choose the sport that suits them!.

To date three rounds of educational events have been held:

  • March 2005, the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (AOSC)

2,550 school pupils in their first year at junior high school from 29 schools and 170 volunteers from the General Secretariat attended.

.

  • May 2005, Olympic Indoor Hall, Galatsi

2,000 school pupils in their sixth year at primary school from 60 schools and 110 volunteers attended.

  • October 2005, Olympic Equestrian Centre, Markopoulo - World Equestrian Cup

700 school pupils in their sixth year at primary school from 30 schools and 60 volunteers attended.

B) "Open Stadiums: a place to celebrate - a way of life! "

In the summer of 2005, to mark the first anniversary of the hosting of the Athens Olympic Games, a series of anniversary celebrations were held which gave the public the opportunity to attend a range of cultural, educational and artistic happenings at sports venues.

The scheduled activities were held over the period 28 July - 4 September 2005 and included: an exhibition of Olympic and Paralympic sports, street theatre performances, events in cooperation with the Greek Folk School, events with cooperation with youth radio stations, educational courses in collaboration with the Hellenic Museum of Folk Art and the Hellenic Children's Museum and artistic events in cooperation with the Embassy of China.

The majority of these events were held in the grounds of AOSC and at the Olympic Beach Volley stadium at Faliro (namely a concert by Elena Paparizou on 13 August 2005) with the involvement of 200 volunteers.
